Character animation: In this animation the radical of the character is marked in blue color, the remaining strokes in gray.
General writing rules: Please find basic information about general writing rules for Chinese (especially about the writing directions of the strokes) on our homepage under "CHINESE CHARACTERS – GENERAL WRITING RULES".
Meanings: The meanings on the right side of the character concentrate on the basic meanings of this single character in modern Chinese. On purpose, we don't show all its meanings in combination with other characters here. This shall help you to not become confused by too much diverging vocabulary. Instead, it will enable you, to understand how these basic meanings influence the character’s significance in other combinations.
Mnemonics (in blue): Mnemonics shall help you to easier remember characters. If a character doesn’t show a mnemonic, but you have an idea for one, please send it to us by email (see link below the mnemonic), so that more learners can profit from your idea. Thank you so much!
